Penang International Dragon Boat festival 2009

Just last week at 24th May 2009, we went to Teluk Bahang Dam where the they have this dragon boat rowing competition.

I never really been to the dam before except went pass it when I was having an "Island Tour" with my friends on bike where we would travel around the Penang Island on bike and we'd pass through the dam.

It was big.. and the weather is scorchingly hot! Felt like I was having sun burn.. anyway, just took a few shots and since my lens can't zoom too far and we're not allowed to go any nearer to the docks... i didnt really took any good shots of the dragon boats itself. but it was okay, as the boat was not that pretty as I'd imagine them to be. it's just an ordinary boat with an ordinary looking dragon head at the front.

Overall, if u didnt go.. no .. u didnt miss a lot. there was hardly any cheering when any of the boat won the round of the competition... they just row and row and pass the finish line and that's it.

-_-!
I think i shot the environment more than the event itself.. LOL..

Tongue Twisters

This morning I was listening to my podcasts and the topic of the day was tongue twisters. For those of you who has no idea what that is, is basically a sentence which is hard to pronounce correctly.

Tongue-twisters may rely on similar but distinct phonemes (e.g., s [s] and sh [ʃ]) - wikipedia.
This could be Sea or Sea which brings up my 2 favorite tongue twisters of all time.

Read through this quickly and see if you could get them correctly or not ^^
1) She sells sea shells at sea shore.

2)
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much wood as he could,
and chuck as much wood as a woodchuck would chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

I can do the 2nd one easily but the first one really got to me. The 'Sh' sound and the 'S' sound is pretty confusing...

Actually, the most surprising thing to me was... there's actually a Guinness World Record for the hardest tongue twister... i dunno how on earth do they quantify a sentence as the hardest.. perhaps they sample a few thousand pepple and see how many people would fail in the pronunciation of the sentence and compared between each accordingly?

Anyway, your hardest tongue twister according to Guinness Book of Record is :-

"The sixth sick sheikh's sixth sheep's sick"

Honestly speaking, i couldn't get this correctly without repeatedly reading a few words double.. LOL.... have fun trying!

Please do share some of the nicer ones or any of your favorites here... =D

Windows 7 Beta RC1

It has a set of really funky wallpaper for Windows...

I'm a windows user for quite a while now ever since i departed from the days of Dos. It has been windows 3.1 briefly but then moved till XP.

I didn't even use Vista... I was excited because it seemed that Microsoft has came up with something that looks pretty and user friendly to their arc rival - Apple inc.'s Mac OSX. I was skeptical, I tried Vista for the sake of testing it out, sure it has fancy effects and a freshier look for the next gen, but it wasn't quite the thing that would make me switch. drivers compatibilities, the constant bugging of windows that prompted u for authority to execute a certain programs, etc... no no.. and I'm not the only one...

Hence Microsoft came out with something... Windows 7 to replace Vista. If you look at it, Vista has only been out like for.. 2 years? correct me if i'm wrong but dun u think this is a bit fast to release a newer OS? I was hesitated to try out the first Beta release of Windows 7... from the screenshots it looked exactly almost 90% the same as Vista...

but something changed my mind, as I've visited numerous technology sites which previews the beta built, words of compliment impressed me to give this OS a try which I did and I found out that Microsoft actually released the RC1.

Click HERE to get your own copy, u'll have to burnt the .ISO image into a DVD or i'm not sure perhaps you could mount the image and install as well?

I've been using it for the past 1 hour and now typing out this blog in IE8 in Windows 7 and I must say, I am IMPRESSED. The speed is there, the visual effects is there... just some hiccups on the javaruntime I have yet to install for IE.

Give it a try, I think i'm gonna actually look forward to the release this coming months. : )

They finally changed mspaint! LOL

It'll be interesting to see what Apple will shows out with their latest OSX built - Snow Leapord which is coming out this year as well... A little competition is good : ) heh heh...

P/S: warning, you may try this and have it installed till next year, but I've heard that it will force you to shutdown every 2 hours... i have yet to reach that to be able to confirm but do it as your 2ndary OS for now. thank you!

Little wormy worm...

Now this is something i haven't see for quite sometime.. a caterpillar! Last month my dad asked me to go to our little garden in front of our house where he and my mum planted quite a few small plants there.

There's this caterpillar... from my understanding, this is almost the final phase where it will soon turn onto a cocoon and then become a butterfly later. It was huge... almost like my index finger.. and almost moderate greenish in color.

It has this decos that looked like giant "eyes" near its head and my guess is it's used to scare off potential hunters. the colors actually blend well with the leaves of the plant and if you didnt look carefully, actually the hint that give away its presence was..... tada.. its poo. hahahah, it dropped right off the leaves onto the cement.

Anyway, after a few more days I tried to pry around the leaves to see if it has turned into a cocoon yet or not as i've never seen an actual ones b4, all i ever saw was the leftover but this round, that little fella was gone. no where to be seen.. i checked the nearby plants and it's not there too.. I think the birds must have gotten him.. poor thing... :(

but this is the food chain isn't it... small gets eaten by bigger ones.. oh well, R.I.P. my little fren... hope to see more of them here and hopefully make it to their butterfly form next round. :)

Seasons

We have all sorts of seasons.... but at Malaysia here, we have 1 more "special" season. This morning, i woke up from my bed.. eyes wide.. nose uncomfortable.. why? I sniffed.... it smelled like.. burnt stuff. At first I thought that dude at the church beside my place was burning the dry leaves again.

Oh boy, I was close... it was something burnt and blown to our country.... Haze... haven't got news yet... but I bed it's Sumatera's hotspot again... hence the Haze season....

Thanks for yearly contribution to the global warming... you guys made it worse! congrats...

Negative energy

WARNING! do not read if you dun want such negative post to affect your weekend in anyway, else pls proceed...

Lately I felt more n more negative energies flowing around office area, well at least around my team. I'm not sure what caused this, perhaps it's only my imagination.. but then I sense something's wrong. Most of the team mates rushing for 1 major project which they had been hard at work for quite some time.. and by hard i mean really hard.. good job guys.

And around the office there's generally 3 types of people i can see :-
1) HARDCORE - Will stop at nothing and will do everything to get things done.. mean, iron-fist ruling involved.
2) LAZY - Likes to push things around, delay things, play taichi and show you the sleepy face and test your patience.. in short. A stone.
3) NORMAL - Will work and finish up tasks at hand or at the very least do their best to get things done and not to act in either one of the 1st or 2nd category.

Well, I would say I'm under the 3rd category.. hey.. all of the people who work around me can judge me to see if u'd agree okay?

My principle is quite simple, u give me work, i do my best to complete them. But there are a "certain individual" who likes to talk back bout you... at your back.. I've been complaint a lot. Actually every since the 3rd day I've been here, me and PNee have both been complained a lot of times.. about all sort of things... talk too loud, talk non work related stuff, open facebook during work.. and for the record, i didnt open up facebook during work, it could probably be that 1 time that people sent me link in email about their wedding video and it happened to be in facebook and i've clicked that link during work.. okay..so that's my fault.. and lately, i've got to know that "someone" complained i talked rudely on the phone with my China users. Wow.. just Wow... u know what? I could give that "someone" those users that i'm dealing with all this while.. with their names and phone extension numbers.. and "someone" can contact them directly 1 by 1 and asked them if i did talk to them rudely or not? if yes, I apologize immediately in front of everyone to that "someone"... and if not? well, could that "someone" do the same? say sorry to me in front of everyone else? and promise me never ever ever the repeat that same thing again either to me or anyone else? enough with the backstabbing or power exerting.

Rulling with iron fist during work just because your position is higher than us will only make people afraid of you, sick of you, and temporily... of cos u get things done.. but in the long run? wow... u'd make a lot of enemies... congrats. I still think the kinder approach will earn u respect and people or subordinates will be more than willing to go that extra miles for you... any given day. I'm not asking "someone" to be sissy or talk softly..certainly no.. but i will not tolerate barbaric approach. My dad is a manager, and as i grew up.. i heard stories of how he treated his subordinates.. of cos at times with the approach i've stated above. But as i came to this society and work under certain bosses, i knew this approach is not going to work. I told my dad to change himself... slowly but surely... he did. This you can save yourself the anger.. which will lead to boiling blood pressure shooting high up the sky which can lead to a lot of health problem like heart attack... and 2nd of all.. people will respect you if you put yourself at the same level as them and work together... not above them.

Ok so up till this point, i have no idea who that "someone" was.. i can only make certain guesses... either MsA or MsB. fine... i can't change them... but i can change myself.. or i can change my surroundings..

Sorry for venting that out of my chest, it feels better. And at times like this, it's good to have some nice pair of ears beside you. thanks to some of my friends for their comforting and enlightening words. :)

P/S: I'll get back to my "normal" posts after this.. hahahahha. sorry n thanks for bearing with me...

Change of steps...

Let's see, I've got it from 6 years ago.. right when I'm about to participate in a 6 months industrial training in Multics... (software house) for my Degree course. Mum bought it for me, wow... talked about growing up in the sense that i'm wearing this type of shoe... working shoe, not those sport shoe or any casual wear... but this... Signifies that I'm about to enter working adult life soon.

Scholl is the brand and I've got 1 word to describe it.. actually 2... 1) comfortable; 2) long lasting.

It weathered my journey for 6 long years... never gave up.. nor do i, it really meant something.. first of all.. my mum gave it to me... and 2nd of all.. come on.. 6 years.. a shoe. never thought i'd have so much feeling for a shoe.. :p I've sent it for repair twice... RM50 per time.. uugh.. but i can't do it for the third time as it's not worth it anymore..

That's why, last Saturday my dad got me this... a new one.. tried it once at other outlet and finally got it from vouchers from my dad. :) Thank you very much dad..

Hope this one gonna last me another 5 or more years to come :) It's a bit stiff and tight right now but they said leather's gonna be loose the longer you wear it so... yeah, my previous pair was pretty loose and much more comfier. hahahaha..

P/S: my shoe size is 10, I asked for 11 but they dun have it for this design...so..

Product shot outing - Phones @ 16th May 2009

Kevin Chooi lead a group of DRC shutterbugs on an event outing last Saturday, to shoot product shots.. the item is our phones. :)

We're being paired into groups of 3 people.. some might have more.. my group has 4, we gathered at Kuan Yin temple and head out to nearby locales for the shooting. I didn't have too much idea on how to shoot nor I brought any props to help me out.. aih.. under prepared.

Some idea I had by replacing the traditional keypad of a spoiled public phone with iPhone's virtual keypad..

Anyway, I didn't really shoot a lot of shots partly because I'm holding on to my phone's life... avoiding scratches and other damages such as moisture.. i'm very particular bout my gadgets.. sorry. hahahhaa..

So I managed to submit 1 shot :-

My submission shot..

and the rest for keepsake. It's actually a competition also, and wait for the result from Kevin this coming week.. :) hope for the best!

Actually I like this idea also, will be bringing out some of my other gadgets to shoot out in the wild or at home for product shoot that is not inside my light box.. refreshing feel.

P/S: oh yes, I have an iPhone now incase u're wondering.. hahahahha :) my dream phone.. now I need to find out what the next iPhone will have that I can't resist.. :p

Wesak day outing @ 9th May 2009

So last Saturday was Wesak day, my auntie has RM50 coupon for us to spend at Penang Buddhist center and me and my parents just went there.

I remember last year I kinda snap some photos too but then I'm not sure if i've posted them up here.. hahahhaha..

Anyway, there's nothing unusual this year but only me with my dslr and snapping for some coverage. It was drizzling, jam everywhere... outside on the road and inside with people. We just ate some vege meal, drinked soya bean and that's it. Proceeded to pray and I was snapping some photos to be uploaded here.

There's this Buddha statue inside the hall where people can scope water and pour it on top of the statue.

A panoramic view of the scene inside the hall

Last but not least, made a small donation to the Buddhist charity fund there where they use the public fund and provide free medicine and education for ppl outside. :)

There's even a cake for this event.. :)

How did you spent your Wesak day?

Penang Yoga Association charity dinner night @ Masyarakat Penyayang @ 26th Apr 2009

Last 2 weeks ago, me and my friends, SuLing and ZinZin went on to participate in the charity night organized by the Penang Yoga association.

It's a charity event whereby goers purchase coupons to the vege-only style dinner to be served at each desks.

Pose around b4 the show

This is the first time I'm actually at the Masyarakat Penyayang building as previously i knew that there has been a host of activities related to charities being organized there periodically.

Gym members and Sam

Anyway, this was introduced by our Fitball class instructor - Sam and I thought we'd give it a go... I didn't do the presentation though but 2 others of my friends did, along with Sam. :)

Group yoga

Little girls dancing.. very sweet...

Fitball presentation in action!

Sam's dual yoga

It was a wonderful night of food and dances and singing shows, : ) It's nice to see someone dance on the fitball once in a while.. hahahahha

Good job!
Anyway, good job guys... especially Sam, did a lot of presentations that night including dual yoga, ^^
P/S: I noticed that Sam didn't smile for camera... very cool indeed but he's not that 'serious' outside of the class/ stage. :)
